AISIN Opens New Transmission Plant in Texas

  • New “Plant of the Future” is first AISIN manufacturing facility in Texas
  • Expected to become core plant in AISIN powertrain business in North America

CIBOLO, Texas, Sept. 17, 2021 – AISIN Corporation, the fifth largest Tier One automotive supplier in the world, today celebrated the opening of AW Texas, its newest manufacturing plant in North America and its first in the State of Texas. The 463,800 square foot plant, which produces high quality/high performance automatic and Hybrid transmissions currently employs approximately 500 team members and is expected to grow to more than 900 in the future as the plant expands.

Due to concerns about Covid, the event was intentionally kept small. As a result, AISIN Corporation President Moritaka Yoshida did not attend as planned, but sent a video message from company headquarters in Japan.

“While I normally would have joined you to celebrate this new plant together,” said Mr. Yoshida, “I am doing my second best with this video message. I want to express my sincere appreciation to all who made this day possible, including the members of the State of Texas and City of Cibolo. Despite some difficulties due to the pandemic, we were able to proceed with construction as planned and celebrate today, though on a smaller scale.”

With the addition of the new Texas plant AISIN continues to make contributions to the development of automotive industries throughout North America, said Mr. Yoshida, who called AW Texas “a concept and a plant of the future.” He said the company is taking on challenges for innovative manufacturing excellence and hopes to grow the plant into a highly advanced manufacturing facility, “which not only responds to the current demand for automatic transmissions, but also to future technologies, including the next generation of mobility needs and electrification.”

AISIN, which invested $400 million in the new plant, is not new to Texas, and has a sales and marketing office in Plano and logistics/warehouse facilities in Laredo.

“I also want to acknowledge my appreciation of Texas Gov. Greg Abbot who came all the way to Japan in 2019 and spoke passionately about his great hope and willingness to extend his full support to AISIN. And, true to his words, we have received tremendous support from the State of Texas and the City of Cibolo,” added Mr. Yoshida.
